The Vermont Legislature will vote on the relicensing of Entergy Corporation's Vermont Yankee this spring - we have the opportunity to turn from dangerous and polluting nuclear power to conservation and renewable, community-based energy sources.

    NO GASOLINE TOUR ROLLS

Hello, all. Last week I did the final 250 miles of training and felt fine, so I guess I'm as ready as I'll ever be for the No Gasoline Tour 2008. I'm excited for the first leg, starting next Wedneseday.

    Here's a video I put together:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fI5eENHZEp...

It captures the spirit of the tour pretty well. I hope you'll forward it to any friends you might have interested in music, bicycling, or the environment.

Many thanks to Wheel and Sprocket, especially Bob Jung, and to my friends who have biked with me over the summer.

Also, here's the scoop on the semi-organized ride on Saturday 9/20 to benefit the Urban Ecology Center: I and a small group of riders will leave the Cafe Carpe in Fort Atkinson at 8am, following this route:
    http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2205227

I'd expect we'll be in Dousman by 10:30 or so, Waukesha by 11:30, and arrive at the UEC in Washington Park by 1pm. So joining the ride is as simple as this: you head west along the route, until you meet a group of cyclists that includes a recumbent with a guitar on a rack in back. That's probably us. Then, you join us and ride back.

You pick the time of your departure, you decide the mileage, and once you meet up with the group, trust me -- we'll be moving at a relaxed pace that anyone can maintain (I'll be towing gear, and will have done over 400 miles in the past 10 days, so I won't be moving all that quickly.) We'll arrive at the UEC, and if you feel like writing a check for any amount, I'll collect them and add my own and hand them over. Then we'll all have some conversation and drink some water and disperse, and hopefully I'll see you at the show. It goes without saying but I'll say it: you ride at your own risk and PLEASE, for crying out loud, wear a helmet.

Finally, they'll have extra bike racks at Turner Hall for the show, and Alterra Coffee will be giving out coupons for a free cup if you ride to the show. Again, if you ride to the show: SERIOUSLY, wear a helmet and use lights!

    Thank you all,

    PM

ps I'll post the details of the UEC ride on my myspace page in the blog section, and if I get around to it I'll post routemaps for all the legs of the tour.

    Hello to all!

I hope that this evening finds you warm and dry. No major thunderstorms in Somerville yet!

Anyway, I wanted to take a minute to tell you about a place that I currently frequent often and where I volunteer. It is a great place to visit if you are a person who likes to buy locally, support local business, and are on the hunt for fresh veggies like corn, squash, lettuce, radishes...

The farm I work at is slowly but surely coming very close to organic, and favors sustainable farming practices. It is an original farm from the time when Lexington was all farms back at the turn of the century. Now it is surrounded by houses, an anachronism from a time where closeness to the city meant fresher food.

Anyway I could go on and on (i.e. often you can PICK your own veggies! Also some flowers), but here is some more specific information about the place. It is called Busa farm, and here is their site:
    http://www.busafarm.com/
    52 Lowell St, Lexington, MA

You can often find the farmer working out in the fields. Feel free to go meet him and ask him questions about his produce. He is very knowledgeable and has been on this farm since he was a kid. His specialty is heirloom tomatoes and also zucchini and eggplant varieties that originate in Italy. There are also italian foods for sale in the farm stand, and also fresh bread from Iggies in Cambridge.

I am saying that this place has a lot of great qualities, and they are in need of your support! Fresh farmed veggies for sale at their stand. I have found that this place is a little known treasure, so please visit. : )

Let me know if you have any questions!

    Best regards,
    Elizabeth

      This farm sounds fabulous.

Continuing the thought of supporting family farms, this weekend is Massachusetts sales tax "holiday", I encourage all to support family-owned businesses over korporate chain / box box sprawlmart-type stores (sorry, this includes franchises).

    Freiamt, Germany

Dawn was just breaking over the Black Forest when Helga Schneider climbed out of bed, tugged on her overalls and thick brown galoshes, and trudged out to the cow pen. She herded a dozen head into a tiled alcove strewn with straw and manure, and began fixing rubber hoses to swollen udders.

Within minutes, milk was snaking through a maze of tubes to a copper-plated box the size of a cinder block, where the warmth was siphoned off and stored for heating everything from the Schneider’s bath water to their home.

Many residents of this farming village have also found creative ways to harvest energy, be it turning manure into biofuel or installing turbines in the local creek. Thanks to their ingenuity, Freiamt is not only energy independent, but produces 17 percent more power than it uses.

It’s a feat that defies conventional ideas about energy – that big companies are key to a secure supply, that renewable sources can only meet a fraction of society’s needs, that green energy is the domain of liberals and idealists.

Over 33,000 buyers signed up for GM electric car
    By Kevin Krolicki
Tue Aug 12, 6:03 PM ET

DETROIT (Reuters) - In a bid to show the demand for the upcoming all-electric Chevrolet Volt, a proponent of the car has released details of an unofficial waiting list for the vehicle with over 33,000 prospective buyers.

Lyle Dennis, a New York neurologist who has emerged as a prominent enthusiast for the battery-powered car from General Motors Corp, has been assembling a list of prospective Volt buyers for over a year through his Web site GM-Volt.com.

On Tuesday, Dennis released details gleaned from the list showing that 33,411 people had signed up to show their intent to buy a Volt when the rechargeable car is released in 2010.

The list shows the highest number of potential Volt buyers in California, Texas, Florida and Michigan. It also includes potential buyers from 46 countries outside the United States.
