How to use the Chase Sapphire Preferred® card for travel

Here are real ways Going team members use the card_name:

Rental car insurance

My coworker Brooke, author of the In The Know newsletters, tells me of two two-week trips in Iceland and Canada where she used the primary auto rental coverage from her Chase Sapphire Preferred.

When you pay with Chase Sapphire Preferred, coverage is automatic when you charge the entire rental to your card. That means you can save hundreds, if not thousands, per trip by declining the rental car company’s overpriced insurance

“Thankfully, I didn't need to make use of the insurance, as we made it through both trips without incident, but it's saved me a bunch of money on additional coverage. Plus, the peace of mind is worth its weight in gold Biscoff cookies,” said Brooke.

Cheap Delta domestic flights

Chase Sapphire Preferred points don’t transfer to Delta SkyMiles. But Flight Expert Lousson has a backdoor way to use points for domestic Delta flights. Chase points transfer 1:1 to Virgin Atlantic, which partners with Delta.

Lousson finds Delta domestic flights available through Virgin, then transfers his Chase Sapphire Preferred points to Virgin to book for him and his family.

Earning 5x points on Chase Travel®

Kayla, one of Going's email experts, told me, “When my husband and I went to Italy, we booked a United flight through Chase Travel® to earn 5x points.”

Purchases made with the Chase Sapphire Preferred on Chase Travel for flights, cruises, hotels, rental cars, activities, and tours on travel earn 5x points per dollar, so this can be a rewarding way to earn more quickly.

Transfer bonuses

Rob, leader of our Member Success team, raved to me about the airline transfer partners with Chase Sapphire Preferred. Most times, points transfer 1:1 to airline partners, but Rob found a deal when a transfer bonus was running, meaning he needed 20% less points to book the flight.

Rob said, “I just used the 20% transfer bonus to Air Canada to score a business flight home instead of splurging for premium economy. I got to double splurge and get woken up in the middle of the night for the ‘cake service.’”

Purchase protection

In life, just like in airline transit, sometimes shift happens. Lousson also told me of a time when the Purchase Protection on the Chase Sapphire Preferred came in clutch.

Lousson told me, “My wife's rental car got broken into when she was on a work retreat, and since we bought her purse, watch, and headphones with our Chase Sapphire Preferred, they were covered under Purchase Protection. They cut us a check to get some stuff back.”

No one likes to imagine worst-case scenarios when traveling, but benefits like this help give travelers peace of mind and security.

New credit up to $120 for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS

A few months ago, you might recall me spilling digital ink, fretting that I’d need to open a new card to renew my Global Entry access. I hemmed and hawed over whether to splurge for a premium card.

Now, I don’t have to worry. My Chase Sapphire Preferred now includes the application fee credit for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS. (But go with Global Entry and you get TSA PreCheck, too). I plan to use this very soon!

Chase Sapphire Preferred makes travel more rewarding—for the long-term

There you have it. My teammates and I have used card_name to book flights for less, earn more points, get peace of mind and security, and zip through security lines.
