Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Miami (MIA)

Aim for the Goldilocks Window

Despite what some say, we contend there is no specific day of the week when the prices on airline tickets are suddenly cheaper—we see great deals pop up all the time. But there are periods before a trip when ticket prices tend to be at their lowest, which is when we recommend you try to book your flights. With domestic trips, it’s 1-3 months before a flight. With international trips, it’s 2-8 months. We call this the Goldilocks Window.

If, however, your trip is going to be during the peak travel season or a busy holiday, or your travel dates aren’t flexible, we recommend adding a few months to that. Planning a summer vacation? You’ll want to book your flights the winter before. Flying home for Christmas? Book those tickets in July. And you should always try to buy your tickets before the airlines raise prices as the departure date nears. Fares typically go up 21, 14, and 7 days before a flight.

Consider other departure airport options

Most people, when planning a trip, look at the fares from the airport closest to where they live—that only makes sense. But sometimes you can actually save money on tickets if you book a flight from an airport that’s further away, even if it means booking a separate short flight or train ticket to get to that airport.

Let’s say you’re in the Washington DC area and you want to fly to Miami. If you only looked at flights from Reagan National, you’d think the lowest fare is something like $150 roundtrip. But if you look at other airports in the area, you’ll see that flights to Miami from Baltimore can be $80 or less roundtrip. Even when you add a longer drive to an airport that’s further away, you’re still saving money. What’s more, this trick can also work when the alternate airport is further away, so it’s a good idea to keep your options open.

Let airfare costs determine when you fly

When we choose vacation days first and only then look at the cost of flights, the sticker price can sometimes be a little shocking. Peak travel seasons are busy for a reason, and airlines price tickets accordingly. Instead, try to look at the cost of flights first and then choose your vacation time based on when flights are cheaper.

If your vacation days can’t be flexible, however, or you’re traveling during a peak tourist season or a holiday, there are still a couple of things you can do to help save a bit of money. Summer vacations tend to come with expensive airline tickets, but fares are usually a bit less during the first two weeks of June and the last two weeks of August.

Additionally, you can avoid flying on the days that are most expensive (Fridays and Sundays) and aim for the days when it’s cheaper (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays).

Sign up for fare alerts

Most travelers are too busy to spend hours every day searching for a better deal on airfare, but you can save yourself loads of time and stress by signing up for email fare alerts. With a few clicks, you can set alerts that will notify you when airfare drops into the price range you want to pay. Just remember that if your plans are flexible, you’ll have to set up an alert for each potential itinerary. Or you can join Going and let us monitor fares for you.

There are 51 airlines serving Miami International Airport, which is a hub for American. It’s also a focus city for Avianca, Frontier, LATAM, and Spirit. There are 84 airports around the US with direct service to Miami.

Fly into Fort Lauderdale instead

Miami International Airport (MIA) is the more convenient airport option for travelers to Miami, but more budget carriers use nearby Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) as their hub in the region. Fort Lauderdale’s airport is about 30 miles from Miami and some of the airlines you’ll find there are ones that have a more limited presence at Miami’s airport—including JetBlue, Southwest, and Allegiant Air.

Avoid the winter holidays and Spring Break

Miami is popular year-round, to a certain extent, but there are certain times of the year when its popularity soars along with the cost of airline tickets. The winter holiday season is one to avoid if you’re on a budget, as is Spring Break.

Don’t forget to check Southwest

There are so many airline options when you search for a flight anywhere that you might not notice a big one that’s always missing: Southwest. Southwest’s tickets don’t show up in any of the OTAs, so to check their fares you’ve got to go to the source. And since Southwest flies into both Miami and Fort Lauderdale, you’ll have plenty of options.
