The third-most populated city in Texas (and 9th in the US), Dallas is a sprawling metropolis with an equally large international airport. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is roughly the size of Manhattan and is served by more than two dozen airlines connecting travelers to more than 50 international destinations. That’s good news for travelers as there are plenty of deals to be found from Dallas, particularly to destinations in Latin America and Europe.

How many airports are there in Dallas?

The Dallas-Fort Worth area is served by two main airports, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Love Field (DAL). DFW is the main international airport; it’s a hub for American Airlines and offers direct flights to dozens of places around the globe as well as more than 150 destinations in the US. In fact, you can reach just about any corner of the continental US in about four hours or less from DFW.  While it’s fairly monopolized by American Airlines, it ‘s also served by international carriers like British Airways, Lufthansa, Avianca, and Korean Air.

Love Field is much smaller and serves a variety of domestic destinations. It’s a hub for Southwest and is served by Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines, so you can also connect to international destinations, though those flights will have a stop in another US city.

What’s the best airport for international deals from Dallas?

The best international deals are found from DFW. It’s the only airport of the two Dallas-area airports that offers direct flights to international destinations, and while American Airlines dominates its services, there are still deals to be found.

How much time do I need to connect in Dallas?

There are five terminals at DFW. Terminals A, B, C and E serve domestic flights while Terminal D serves all international routes. The free Skylink light rail train connects all five terminals and is the shortest route between terminals post-security. The train operates 24 hour per day and trains arrive every two minutes; the average ride time is five minutes, while the longest ride between terminals is nine minutes.

Because the terminals are so well connected, for a domestic-to-domestic connection at DFW the minimum connection time is just 40 minutes (though you may want to allow additional time for a more leisurely connection and less risk that a delayed flight could derail your plans). The minimum is the same for a domestic-to-international connection, but again you may want to allow more.

For an international-to-domestic connection, the minimum is 85 minutes, but as anyone who has sprinted through an airport exhausted after a delayed long-haul flight and long customs lines knows, it’s better to pad that time a bit. All passengers arriving from abroad will need to go through customs and immigration, retrieve any checked luggage and recheck it, transfer terminals, and go back through security. The free Terminal Link van shuttle leaves every 10 minutes and connects all terminals outside of security.

If you're connecting from DFW to Love Field on an international-to-domestic connection, allow three hours as you'll need to go through customs and immigration at DFW, collect any luggage, travel between the airports, recheck luggage if needed, and go through security. The two airports are only 30 minutes apart by taxi, but delays happen and a shorter connection means more risk. If you're connecting from Love Field to DFW on a domestic-to-international connection, you could likely schedule a slightly shorter connection, but it could become stressful if your first flight is delayed or there's heavy traffic. Four to five hours provides a lot more wiggle room.

How much time do I need for a layover in Dallas?

From DFW there are a few options to get to downtown Dallas. Public transport costs only a few dollars but can take about an hour. From the station at Terminal A, take DART Rail Orange Line or hop on the free bus from any terminal to the Remote South Parking Lot where you can jump on DART bus route 408 or the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) commuter rail. A taxi will take about 30 minutes (though allow more in case of heavy traffic or other delays) and cost about $45. From Love Field, you can take the Green or Orange Line downtown; the journey takes about 30 minutes total. A taxi takes about 15 minutes for the six-mile journey.

If you want to do more than grab a quick bite and hurry back to the airport, you’ll need at least 5-6 hours for your layover (more if you’re connecting from an international flight or will be traveling during rush hour). Seven or eight hours would allow a slightly more relaxed schedule, with time to visit downtown sites like JFK Memorial Plaza, the Holocaust Museum, Dallas Aquarium, or the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza (which focuses on the life and assassination of JFK).
