Top tips for finding a cheap flight to Morocco
Book in the Goldilocks Window
There’s no perfect day to book flights, but there is a window when they’re most likely to be cheaper. It’s not too far ahead of your flight but not too late either. That’s why we call it the Goldilocks Window. The window falls 1–3 months before a domestic trip and 2–8 months before an international trip.
For anyone booking a flight during peak travel season, however, we recommend booking on the earlier side. For a January trip to the Moroccan mountains, start planning in July, for example. Whatever you do, don’t wait until the last minute. Deals are few and far between just before departure dates, especially during busy seasons. In fact, airlines regularly raise prices 21, 14, and 7 days before a trip.
Use the Greek Islands Trick
One of our favorite ways to reach the Greek islands on a budget can also work for Morocco. The Greek Islands Trick involves getting as close to your final destination as you can for the cheapest price, then finding a budget airline or alternate mode of transit for the last leg.
Say you want to fly from Atlanta to Marrakech in May, but prices are upwards of $1,300. Instead, look for fares to Paris, Milan, or London, often found for under $700. Pair that with a low-cost airline ticket (sometimes under $200) from one of those cities to Marrakech, and you’ve saved yourself a bit of cash that you can put toward a few nights in a hotel. Once you get across the ocean, flights are often cheaper, especially if you’re willing to fly on a budget airline. This type of travel involves a little more planning on your part, but it can save a bundle.
Search alternative departure airports
Travelers living near Hartsfield–Jackson may have never considered flying out of any other airport. Why would you, when the world’s busiest airport is right there? Believe it or not, there may be situations in which you could actually save money by looking at long-haul flights from other cities—even if it means you have to take a short flight from Atlanta to get there.
We see surprisingly cheap fares from all sorts of airports, big and small, and if you’re only looking at flights from your home airport you could miss out. If you see a $500 roundtrip fare from New York to Marrakech, for instance, then even adding a $250 flight from Atlanta to New York would mean you’re still saving a whole bunch of money. In other words, even Atlanta-area residents can benefit from checking out deals from other major airports before booking a trip.
Fly when it’s cheaper
If you can be flexible with your travel dates, you can usually find better flight prices. Peak seasons are the most expensive time to travel because lots of people wanting to go somewhere in a limited time frame means airlines can charge more for flights. Off seasons, like summer in Morocco, are the cheapest time to travel. It’s simple supply and demand.
For good deals and nice weather, we like traveling during shoulder seasons, the periods just before and after a destination’s high season. Think late May through June, as well as September through November in Morocco. It’s warm but not too hot, and you’ll see the country with fewer tourists while getting better flight deals and hotel prices. Thanksgiving week, when most people in the US travel domestically, is often a sneaky week to find international flight deals.
If you do plan to travel during peak season, try to be flexible with the days you fly. Fridays and Sundays are typically the most expensive days to fly, while Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays are the cheapest.
Set alerts for specific trips
One of the easiest ways to find cheap flights is to let technology do the searching for you. Set up fare alerts for your itinerary, and you’ll get an email when prices drop. If your dates are flexible or you want to try flying into or out of different airports, set a few alerts. We recommend doing this well in advance of your trip, before the Goldilocks Window we talked about above, so you can see prices drop. Also, join Going and let us do the searching for you.
Morocco is well-connected to much of the world, though the only nonstop flights from the US are from New York and DC. Still, most visitors can reach Morocco with just one layover.
